Big 12 What Just Happened and PR: Week 9
There are always weeks in College Football where it turns chaotic. Those weeks are glorified through massive upsets that will mix up the CFP.
However, the Big 12 officially got weird in Week 9. Unless you were on a bye, there was no hiding from the upsets.
This week is eerily to what starts up in 2 weeks. The Big 12 play in Basketball is among the most competitive in CBB.
Where any team can beat anybody on any given day. Saturday was the perfect example of that
All 4 favorites in Week 9 lost, including a massive upset that could change the landscape of the Big 12.
Oklahoma’s defense gets shellacked in Manhattan
My oh my, how bad did Alex Grinch’s unit look in this game. The longest play was only 26 yards, but Kansas State’s offense was so methodical.
Kansas State did exactly what Kansas State does in upsetting big time opponents. They kept Jalen Hurts off the field and grinded the clock on offense.
Even with giving up near 500 total yards, Kansas State’s defense played extremely well for 3 quarters. They gave up just 23 points to the highflying Sooners through 3.
Something that was puzzling from a play calling perspective was Oklahoma’s lack of a running game. The Sooners only had 6 carries from running backs for 11 yards.
Oklahoma made themselves one-dimensional with Hurts running majority of the time.
Oklahoma staged a 4th quarter comeback that nearly happened. However, a Sooner touched it first and it was enough for a Wildcat win.
This also means Oklahoma is out of the playoffs and Hurts Heisman chances gets diminished. There is a slim chance for Hurts to still win it, but OU would need to not only win out, but dominate.
For Chris Klieman, this is a humongous win. The first year coach has turned a corner the past few weeks and K-State is playing great football.
Oklahoma will have the week off to prepare for Iowa State. Back in the Top 25, Kansas State will be in Lawrence for the Sunflower Showdown.
Les magic is alive against Tech
Whether it is become a reality or just fantasy, Kansas looks better than they have the past decade. The record won’t show it, but they have been impressive the past few weeks.
While credit goes to the Jayhawks, a Senior All-American making that kind of play is shocking. Kansas had a chance to win the game with a field goal with 13 seconds.
However, it got blocked by Safety Douglas Coleman. What happens next cannot be described.
In that situation, just fall down to the ground. There are less than 10 seconds left and 80 yards away from the end zone.
Nevertheless, Carter Stanley is looking more and more like a legit Big 12 QB. Against a stingy Tech defense, Stanley put up 415 yards and 3 touchdowns. Stephon Robinson Jr. was a huge standout with 186 yards and 2 touchdowns.
Tech’s offense was plenty good in this game, having 483 yards and zero turnovers (outside of the lateral fumble). However, giving up 415 yards through the air on the road doesn’t do you any favors.
With the same record now, both teams are at the bottom of the barrel. For now, Kansas is better than Texas Tech.
Texas Tech will get a very much needed bye week to stop from spiraling down. Kansas will be at home facing off against Kansas State.
Purdy’s arm is not enough for Okie State defense
The attempt to be balanced on offense was not there for Iowa State. Brock Purdy threw the football 62 times in this game. No, I did not say Washington State, I said Iowa State.
Even with 382 yards, Purdy had 3 interceptions and Iowa State had a underwhelming run game. The Cyclones averaged a pedestrian 3.44 yards per game.
Chuba Hubbard didn’t have a huge game (22 carries, 116 yards). They didn’t need one though as Spencer Sanders was a game manager throughout.
Tylan Wallace continues to do Tylan Wallace things with this punishing Touchdown run.
He would be the top receiver in just about any other conference (besides the SEC). Unfortunately for the Cowboy, CeeDee Lamb does exist and plays in the same state as him.
Iowa State will have a bye week to prep for Oklahoma. Oklahoma State will return home next week for a matchup with TCU.
Texas is NOT DBU. Not even close
Where to begin with this game. A few weeks ago, these teams were headed in opposite directions as they are now.
Max Duggan, however, is growing right in front of our eyes. He was the leading passer and rusher in this game for TCU. Time after time, he was able to torch UT’s secondary and finished with 345 total yards.
Devin Duvernay continues to be a homerun hitter in the passing game. Him with Collin Johnson still makes them elite.
With that being said, Sam Ehlinger had one of this worst performances to the tune of 4 interceptions.
Bad decision after bad decision, it was troubling for Texas to score at times. Due to Ehlinger ending potential scoring drives with turnovers.
This is a win TCU needed in order to rejuvenate their season. However, the slate is not easy. It consists of road games with Oklahoma State, Texas Tech, and Oklahoma.
TCU will be playing in Stillwater this upcoming Saturday. Meanwhile, Texas will be off this week, looking ahead to Iowa State.
