Five Burning Questions For The SEC
The college football season is almost here, but the SEC still has some questions that need to be answered. Who will improve, who’s a dark horse, and who’s a real contender? Here are some of the biggest questions in the SEC we still need answered.
5. Does Auburn boast the best defensive front in the SEC?
One of the most interesting SEC questions this year belongs to the war eagles defense. Auburn are rich with veteran talent and potential along their defensive line this season. With players like Derrick Brown, Marlon Davidson, Nick Coe, Kat Bryant and T.D Moultry. Brown, Davidson and Coe were considering declaring for the NFL draft, but chose to return in hope of glory. If the War Eagles offense shows more consistency this year, they may have a chance come playoff time. However, the departures of veteran’s such as Andrew Williams and Dontavious Russell could prove to be challenging. This unit does have depth, but they will not be crowned the SEC’s best before proving it on the gridiron.
4. Will Nick Saban finally lose to a former assistant?
The well-oiled machine that is Alabama has easily been the team of the decade. They have steamrolled over most of their opposition and ALL of Saban’s former assistants. Sixteen wins out of sixteen is an extremely impressive streak, but does it end this year? Saban is scheduled to face Will Muschamp, Jimbo Fisher, Jeremy Pruitt and is likely to face Kirby Smart’s Georgia in the SEC championship game. Georgia looks very strong this year led by quarterback Jake Fromm. Fromm and Smart will almost certainly threaten the streak this season.
3. Is LSU a legitimate dark horse?
LSU has an impressive amount of talent this season and has finally decided to adopt the “spread” offense. LSU quarterback Joe Burrow insists that the tigers will score plenty of points this season. For years now, it seems that everyone has said “LSU has a great defense, if only they had an offense too.”. If everything coming out of the tigers camp is correct, then this year might finally be different. The defense will continue to do its part with studs like Grant Delpit and Kristian Fulton in the secondary. If the tigers prove that they have an offense to match their defense they may finally return to the playoffs. A shot at being SEC champions would also be exciting especially, since their last SEC title came in 2011.
2. Will Florida’s offense find some consistency?
During the off-season Dan Mullen praised his quarterback’s development. However, during the season opener against Miami it’s fair to say that Felipe Franks had an up-and-down game at best. This is supposed to Franks’ coming out season in which he and Mullen take Florida back to the playoffs. There is still time for the gators to sort any issues out on offense for this season. However, they will have to sort them out quickly before facing teams like Tennessee, LSU and Auburn. All of whom they will play within the next two months. The gators may not have looked great against Miami but should be confident in themselves and their coach to turn things around.
1. What is the ceiling for Georgia this year?
Kirby Smart’s Georgia are loaded with talented players but are still receiving doubt from some fans. Jake Fromm is a projected first round pick in next years NFL draft. Georgia has one of the most talented running back groups and a veteran filled offensive line. However, the bulldogs doubters are saying that they don’t have a true number one wide receiver. Even if that is true the Georgia wide receivers are still talented. Pairing all of this with a pretty darn good defense has earned them plenty of praise. So much so, that Georgia was ranked number three in the Associate Press college football ranking poll. All signs are pointing to a shot for the bulldogs in the playoffs. However, they will have to earn their spot just like all the others.
