Potential Keytaon Thompson Landing Spots
Big news in the transfer portal today as Mississippi State Junior QB Keytaon Johnson is now a CFB Free Agent. Was seen as the likely starter by most, but lost a closely contested competition with Senior Tommy Stevens yesterday.
Thompson was the 5th Ranked Dual Threat in 2017 and has the ability to be a high level P5 starter. Still very early in the game, but here are some teams that will likely be in the mix for Thompson.
LSU
LSU jumps off the page as the most likely option at this point in time for the New Orleans native. Thompson received an offer from LSU and was seen as the heavy favorite (75%) on 247 to land him out of HS. Starter Joe Burrow is entering his senior campaign and the Tigers will be looking for a new QB. By giving Thompson a RS season, he would be able to learn the ropes and potentially take over as QB1 for the next two years.
WVU
WVU was considered in the mix for Thompson out of HS and could be considered again without a proven QB. Morgantown has a great reputation of getting transfer QBs from the portal into the NFL and will always be a candidate for CFB free agents. Watching Thompson light up Big 12 defenses with his dual-threat ability would be very entertaining.
UCF
Milton is banged up, Wimbush is gone after this season, and nobody else on the team appears to be a long-term plan. Adding Thompson into the mix could be a nice pickup for a UCF team with only 1 loss in the past 2 seasons. If he’s is as good as he showed glimpses of in SEC play, Thompson could make NY6 run or two with the Knights.
Louisville
Louisville football is a bit of a mess. They struggled tremendously in the passing game last season, although mostly due to O-Line troubles, and could use a player as dynamic as Thompson. The Cardinals heavily targeted him out of HS and could be a valid option if he’s looking to get a lot of touches in big time games. Think a Sophomore season Lamar Jackson.
Tulane
Very close to his hometown, Tulane would give Thompson an option as the unquestioned QB1. Whether or not they are big enough of a Football school to land a guy who’s going to get as much attention on the market, they deserve some recognition. He would put up video game numbers in the AAC.
