Big 12 Freshman Who Could Make An Immediate Impact In 2019
Jadon Hasselwood WR Oklahoma
247 Sports Ranking: No. 4
Oklahoma is always stacked at WR, but Hasselwood is too talented not to make an impact immediately. The track star has great size at 6’3″ and is going to be a mismatch nightmare for Big 12 corners. He will likely be a Top 10 WR in the conference Day one.
Max Duggan QB TCU
247 Sports Ranking: No. 229
The No. 5 ranked Pro Style QB prospect in the class has a very good chance of starting for a team thats very shallow at QB. Odds are Senior Alex Delton will likely get the start week 1, but if he underperforms, Duggan will get his shot. He’s inexperienced, but has the best arm talent in on the team.
Jordan Whittington RB Texas:
247 Sports Ranking: No. 34
Runningback was one of the more unproductive corps for Texas last season and Whittington will be a nice set of fresh legs. He will likely get RB2 touches week 1 and could see 80+ touches this season.
Spencer Rattler QB Oklahoma
247 Sports Ranking: No. 11
Rattler will likely not get any starts in 2019 baring Hurts getting injured, but leaving him off this list would be a tragedy. Oklahoma will likely be winning multiple games by 20+ at halftime allowing Rattler to get some decent run. Keep an eye out for his play in 2019, as he could be a heisman contender in 2020.
Deondrick Glass RB Oklahoma State
247 Sports Ranking: No. 255
Chubba Hubbard will likely get the majority of carries, but this Deondrick Glass kid is a monster. Freshman seem to have more of an impact at RB that any other position and Glass could be one of those breakout guys.
Breece Hall RB Iowa State
247 Sports Ranking: No. 339
Breece Hall was an early enrollee at ISU which means he has a leg up on a good chunk of the players in the class. ISU’s top returning RB ran for only 143 yards last season meaning the RB1 slot is likely wide open. Hall will likely get a ton of touches in 2019.
Grayson Boomer TE Oklahoma State
247 Sports Ranking: No. 209
Tight Ends often aren’t super utilized as possession receivers in college, but their blocking and RedZone attention can change the game offensively. Boomer has shown a lot of potential as a run blocker and possesses ideal size at 6’5″ 230 LBs. If he can make an impact as a receiver, he could be among the best Tight Ends in the conference.
Osita Smith S WVU
247 Sports Ranking: No. 284
WVU lost 2 starting DBs to the transfer portal this offseason and will need young players to step up week 1. Smith is their top 2019 prospect and will likely compete for a starting gig as a true freshman. He has impressive mobility and coverage skills for a 6’2″ safety.
Steven Parker DE Kansas
247 Sports Ranking: No. 349
Kansas lost 2 All-Big 12 defenders (DT Daniel Wise/LB Joe Dineen Jr.) and will be looking to re-tool a defense that was very respectable last season. Steven Parker is the Jayhawk’s top true Freshman recruit and will look to make an immediate impact on the line. The 6’4″ DE racked up 33 sacks in 2 seasons of HS and has a ton of upside as a pass-rusher.
Karter Johnson DT TCU
247 Sports Ranking: No. 360
At 6’3″ 305 LBs, Johnson hasn’t missed a meal. TCU has done a very good job of developing defensive lineman in recent memory and Johnson has the size and athleticism to be productive day 1.
Jaylen Ellis WR Baylor
247 Sports Ranking: No. 460
Outside of Denzel Mims, Baylor has very little proven talent at receiver. Charlie Brewer is one of the more talented QBs in the conference and will be looking for other options in the passing game. Ellis has shown he can burn defenders and create separation with his legs.
Tykee Smith S WVU
247 Sports Ranking: No. 526
Smith is a bit undersized at 5’10”, but makes up for it with good anticipation and a high football IQ. His advanced coverage skills may force WVU to play him Day 1 in what projects to be a shallow group. Wouldn’t be surprised if he gets some run in a pass happy Big 12.
