Candidates to Take Over for Bud Foster
It has been announced that historic Virginia Tech Defensive Coordinator, Bud Foster, will be stepping down from his position come the end of this season. This comes after Foster’s 32-year tenure with the Virginia Tech program. This now leaves an open gap at the defensive coordinator spot for the upcoming season. And now that some names have been thrown around, a list has been compiled of the most likely candidates.
Torrian Gray, Florida DB Coach
Former defensive back for the Virginia Tech Hokies from 1992-1996, Torrian Gray is a highly sought after name coming up next year. Gray has made himself a name around the league in coaching at the college and professional level. Also, Gray formerly was the defensive backs coach for the Hokies back through 2006 seasons up to the 2015 season. It is known that Gray can develop the type of talent Virginia Tech needs and to see hsi name next year wouldn’t be a surprise.
Charley Wiles, Virginia Tech DL Coach
It has seemed that Charley Wiles has been with this program as long as both Frank Beamer and Bud Foster. And to see a traditionally known coach at Virginia Tech take over the reigns of defensive coordinator, would not be a far fetched idea. Wiles had crossed over into the program with Beamer and Foster, so his face would be a nice ease for fans. Also, Wiles recruiting position is known to be very effective for both offense and defense. To see Charley Wiles picked as the new defensive coordinator would be fair.
Todd Grantham, Florida DC
Florida’s Defensive Coordinator has had some history with the Virginia Tech program. Grantham played for the Hokies back through the 1984 season to the 1988 where he played tackle and guard. After his time with the Hokies, Grantham coached various teams at the collegiate level, including Virginia Tech, before he went to the NFL for coaching. Now Grantham has found himself at Florida, where he just coached a Top 30 defense in the country. Whether or not Grantham will give up SEC money to coach at his alma mater is anyone’s guess.
