Evan Norris 2019 NFL First Round Mock Draft
The NFL Draft is set to hit us on April 25th, which is only about three weeks away. Team will attempt to gain future pro-bowlers and legends to further themselves as a franchise. Most players will end up being contribution players for their team in the first round, however, we do get some busts. We will run through all the picks and who we project going for them.
Pick #1. Arizona Cardinals: QB Kyler Murray (Oklahoma)
I personally don’t like this pick for the Cardinals, but recent discussions between Murray and former coach, Kliff Kingsbury, have motioned us to this. I expect Murray to become an athletic starter for the Cardinals and maybe even see the Cardinals move out Josh Rosen for some surrounding members for the offense.
Pick #2. San Francisco 49ers: EDGE Nick Bosa (Ohio State)
After deciding to sit out the rest of his 2019 season, Nick Bosa will go first round to a promising NFL career. We have seen Nick Bosa cause a lot of traffic in the offensive backfield, which the 49ers will benefit from after a lack of sacks in 2019.
Pick #3. New York Jets: LB Josh Allen (Kentucky)
This defense thing for the Jets might start leaning their way starting with the linebacker core. I assume the Jets are wanting to create a staple linebacker core with Mosley just signing and a big draft pick with the talented Josh Allen.
Pick #4. Oakland Raiders: DE Rashan Gary (Michigan)
Much to what we might see from the 49ers is what we will see from the Raiders. Much like the 49ers, the Raiders struggled heavily with being a presence in their opponent’s backfield. I think picking Gary with this pick would be a great move by the Raiders.
Pick #5. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: LB Devin White (LSU)
It would be easy for the Buccaneers to draft an offensive lineman here and build some infrastructure. However, it is hard to pass on a player like Devin White who could become a leader of this defense in the coming years.
Pick #6. New York Giants: QB Dwayne Haskins (Ohio State)
As much as I don’t think the Giants would blatantly guide Eli to an NFL grave, but I think they will do just that. There is a clear sight that Eli will not bring the franchise any more Super Bowls and that it is time for a rebuild. Look for the Giants to build around this dynamic passer.
Pick #7. Jacksonville Jaguars: OT Jawaan Taylor (Florida)
The Jaguar’s ability to defend their pocket and runners last year was just so atrocious. I think this will led to the Jaguars drafting some infrastructure in Taylor above getting a great pass rusher like Ed Oliver.
Pick #8. Detroit Lions: DT Ed Oliver (Houston)
What do you do after losing a great defensive tackle in Haloti Ngata? You just replace him with a maybe better version. I love what Ed Oliver can do in the inside of the defense and what he can do to the backfield of his opponents. I think the Lions get a steal with this one.
Pick #9. Buffalo Bills: OT Andre Dillard (Washington State)
Lots of times we will see young quarterbacks be ruined by a lack of talented offensive linemen. I think the Bills have learned their mistake with that one and will draft a good outside linemen to protect Allen.
Pick #10. Denver Broncos: LB Devin Bush (Michigan)
The Broncos franchise used to be known for some dominant defense not too long ago. I feel that the franchise will hook onto the fact that they ended up dropping to the 21st defense in the league last year. A good presence in the linebacker core with Devin Bush should be a good set.
Pick #11. Cincinnati Bengals: DE Quinnen Williams (Clemson)
This Bengals defense is needing some good personnel on their defensive side. I think a seal in Quinnen Williams will occur for the Bengals, with passing on such a talent would be frowned upon.
Pick #12. Green Bay Packers: TE T.J. Hockenson (Iowa)
Why not give Aaron Rodgers some more weapons to pass to on offense? Yes, there is a need at the offensive line spots, but I think the Packers can develop some decent linemen from free agency or even their own.
Pick #13. Miami Dolphins: EDGE Montez Sweat (Mississippi State)
The Dolphins defense has really been the stand out reason that they have failed to stay in games. I think some good pass rushing skills from Montez Sweat can lead this defense into the right direction. However, in the later rounds expect Miami to draft some receivers and infrastructure.
Pick #14. Atlanta Falcons: OG Jonah Williams (Alabama)
I really didn’t get to watch the Falcons a whole lot this year, but they were out-sacked by their opponents by five. This cannot be happening if you want to ensure the longevity for your great QB in Matt Ryan.
Pick #15. Washington Redskins: QB Drew Lock (Missouri)
This is where I think the Redskins finally get it right. The Redskins have been attracted to smaller quarterbacks come draft time. However, I think the Redskins will flip the script and decide to go with a taller and better passer than they’re accustomed to.
Pick #16. Carolina Panthers: EDGE Brian Burns (Florida State)
There aren’t too many needs for the Panthers, aside from time to develop last year’s picks. I would go with Brian Burns to add a needed edge rusher that the team ultimately lacks.
Pick #17. New York Giants: DE Clelin Ferrell (Clemson)
The New York staple for defense is big, pass rushers that stand for a brand of the team. I think bringing in Ferrell can bring back this memento that was strong defense for the New York area.
Pick #18. Minnesota Vikings: OT Kaleb McGary (Washington)
The offensive line wasn’t a terrible problem for the Vikings last year. However, I think the Vikings will look at their mediocre line and see that it needs improvement. McGary will become a solid piece to this line.
Pick #19. Tennessee Titans: TE Noah Fant (Iowa)
Tennessee has sort of been known for some substantial tight ends to help run their offense. I feel that a pick here with Fant is expect, but if Hockenson is still available, he will become a Titan.
Pick #20. Pittsburgh Steelers: CB Byron Murphy (Washington)
Secondary struggles have continued for the Steelers, even after loading up in the 2018 offseason. It will be no shock to see the Steelers try to bring in more corners to try to develop and solidify their defense.
Pick #21. Seattle Seahawks: WR D.K. Metcalf (Ole Miss)
When you have Russell Wilson in his prime in front of you without any true wide receivers to help him out, you load him up. Drafting a larger wide receiver that is a mix between a high-jumping wide receiver and a tight end would be obvious.
Pick #22. Baltimore Ravens: WR Marquise Brown (Oklahoma)
I think the Ravens feel robbed in this one, after strong intentions of Metcalf have broke out recently. However, a speedy receiver to add to their arsenal who plays much like his cousin up north isn’t bad either.
Pick #23. Houston Texans: CB DeAndre Baker (Georgia)
Losing Tyrann Mathieu to the Kansas City Chiefs, establishing a better secondary will need to become the top priority. Bringing in a lockdown defender in Baker would help from fully failing in the passing defense.
Pick #24. Oakland Raiders: DT Christian Wilkins (Clemson)
Why not just load up on the defensive line and prove that the Khali Mack trade wasn’t that bad? I have Wilkins falling below where expected, but still ending up in a great location for fresh recruits.
Pick #25. Philadelphia Eagles: RB Josh Jacobs (Alabama)
Already the Eagle’s rushing attack is great with Jordan Howard, also Jay Ajayi on injured reserve. Bringing in a fresh, young running back would help prepare for Ajayi not being able to fully play like he once did.
Pick #26. Indianapolis Colts: DT Dexter Lawrence (Clemson)
The offense is great for the Colts and is showing to improve at a exponential level. Now, it is up to the Colts to draft some great defensive players to cause their opponent’s scoring to slow down.
Pick #27. Oakland Raiders: WR A.J. Brown (Ole Miss)
The Raiders are looking shallow right now without any real receivers, aside from their new superstar in Antonio Brown. I believe that bringing in a similar-minded wide receiver to learn under the wing of Antonio Brown would be smart.
Pick #28. Los Angeles Chargers: CB Greedy Williams (LSU)
The Charger’s offense has shown that it can maintain itself to be self-sufficient. This leads the team to try to build up a defense to maybe get a Super Bowl for the franchise. I would really like this pick for the Chargers.
Pick #29. Kansas City Chiefs: C Garrett Bradbury (NC State)
When all your positions are quite loaded, there is nothing much to do. I think that a move to bring in some infrastructure is a smart move for the Chiefs to play safe.
Pick #30. Green Bay Packers: S Juan Thornhill (Virginia)
There is such a large group of late-first and early-second round safeties, but I think the Packers take a chance on Thornhill. It was easy to see that Juan Thornhill had a break out easy in 2018 and his success will continue if a team takes a chance on him.
Pick #31. Los Angeles Rams: DT Jerry Tilley (Notre Dame)
All I could remember from the 2018 season was the big game between the Chiefs and Rams. Both offenses could fire just well, but the defenses were ineffective in trying to stop the other team. A good inside defensive lineman would be an attempt to slow down the run.
Pick #32. New England Patriots: WR Hakeem Butler (Iowa State)
I was going to think that England was going to go for a future quarterback, but Tom Brady has some years in the tank. Filling in some wide receiver spots for the Patriots, especially a skilled one like Butler, would be a better move recently for the franchise.
