Mid Major Teams That Might Not Have to Win Their Conference to Make the NCAA Tournament
It is very hard for teams that are not in a power five conference to make it to the NCAA Tournament without them winning their conference. These are some of the teams that could get an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament without winning their conference.
Utah State Aggies
The Aggies are 23-6 and 13-3 in the Mountain West Conference. The Aggies best win this season is a neutral court win over Saint Mary’s. The Aggies have a showdown this weekend against Nevada. If they win this game it will lock the Aggies into a NCAA Tournament bid.
Wofford Terriers
This Wofford team should get in the tournament even if they don’t win the Southern Conference. The Terriers have a 24-4 record and a 16-0 record in conference play. Wofford is in this position because of the teams almost perfect resume, the Terriers only have four losses that have come to North Carolina, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Mississippi State. Wofford also has very good wins over Furman, UNC Greensboro, and a 20 point win over South Carolina.
Belmont Bruins
The Bruins are 22-4 and 14-2 in OVC play. Belmont has some good wins though, beating fellow bubble team Libscomb, a win over Murray State, and an impressive victory over UCLA. The Bruins do have a very bad loss to .500 Green Bay team that could hurt their resume come selection time.
Saint Mary’s Gaels
At 20-10 the Gaels are in a very good spot to get an at-large bid in the NCAA Tournament. The Gaels have no bad losses on their resume and have one odder quad one win over New Mexico State. Saint Mary’s has a chance to lock in a bid for the NCAA Tournament if they beat Gonzaga tonight.
VCU Rams
At 23-6, VCU might not need an at-large bid in the NCAA Tournament and might get an auto bid in the NCAA Tournament. If that does not happen though the Rams are in prime position to get an at-large bid in the NCAA Tournament. The Rams really don’t have any bad losses and have a very good win over Texas back in December. As long as the Rams do not suffer any bad losses in the Atlantic 10 Tournament and mock brackets hold up, VCU will have at least a 10 seed waiting for them.
