No. 9 Virginia Tech Avoids Getting Stung in Atlanta
No. 9 Virginia Tech avoided an upset tonight to rival and conference opponent, Georgia Tech. The final score was 52-49 in a low scoring affair, even for the two defensive teams. The Hokies move to 3-0 in conference play as Georgia Tech falls to 1-1 in that field.
Recap
This game started off on the right foot leaning towards the Hokies. They had their hand in the scoring margin and went up 11-4, before Georgia Tech chipped away. It seems that whenever the Hokies would find success that the Yellow Jackets would push away the nerve. However, Virginia Tech went into halftime with the lead 29-24, after a great last second layup by Ahmed Hill.
This halftime momentum did little to none for the Hokies as their shooting was awful. This is where PG Jose Alvarado for the Yellow Jackets took over the floor and became a scoring danger. The Hokies managed the game, until 6 minutes remained then things went array. Everything seemed to be hitting for the Yellow Jackets
The two teams battled in a back-and-forth match, until Georgia Tech claimed the lead with 3:25 left. This was short lived, however, as Virginia Tech erased Georgia Tech’s lead and regained it for themselves. Late turnovers and fouling led to the Yellow Jackets demise as they messed up 2 possessions late to have a chance at the win. The Hokies had won and escaped a close one in Atlanta.
Player of the Game
Even though his team lost, Jose Alvarado displayed the best game out of everyone. He shot for a mere 6-11 FG and 3-5 3PT, also, he managed to fit in 4 assists. Great game from this promising point guard as Georgia a Tech will spell trouble for future opponents.
