Rivalry Renewed: Kyler vs Sam
42-0 as a highschool quarterback, 5-0 as a college quarterback. Kyler Murray hadn’t lost a game of football as a starter since middle school. However, once Murray went toe-to-toe with Texas, The Longhorns put themselves back on the map, defeating the Sooners 48-45 at the Cotton Bowl. After the crucial win against the Sooners, Ehlinger went to shake Murray’s hand, Kyler refused. Murray later criticized Ehlinger for trying to shake his hand. Despite Sam Ehlinger putting up 2774 yards and 23 touchdowns on the season, Kyler Murray had “No comment” after being asked if he respected his game. Murray, after signing an MLB contract, only had one chance to win the storied rivalry and came up short. We can expect to see fireworks out of Murray and Ehlinger on Saturday. While not directly saying anything, Murray has created an interesting tension to look forward to see played out on the field. Ehlinger has taken the silent high road while Murray laughed at the question of whether or not he respected Sam’s game. With added tension from Texas Linebacker Breckyn Hager, saying “OU sucks”, Oklahoma and Texas both have a chip on their sholder. Oklahoma, however, has much more to fight for. Texas lost their playoff chances after back to back losses to West Virginia and Oklahoma State. Currently Kyler Murray is neck and neck with Tua Tagovailoa for the Heisman trophy. So the real question is who has the edge in this game? Sam Ehlinger has thrown 23 touchdowns on only 4 interceptions, 2 of which came in their most recent game against Kansas. Kyler Murray has thrown 37 touchdowns on 7 interceptions. So, who is going to outshine the other? Time to find out on Saturday when the Red River Rivalry is renewed.
