Virginia Tech Takes on Virginia for the Commonwealth Cup
Game Implications
This rivalry has been one sided for the majority of the decade. Virginia Tech has won 14 straight years. The Hokies have a lot riding on this game. If the Hokies lose they will not make a bowl game and have a losing season for the first time since 1992. For UVA, if they win this game, they will finally win the Commonwealth Cup for the first time since 2004.
Keys to Success:
Virginia Tech:
Virginia Tech’s offense is very capable of scoring points. This game will solely reside on their defense. Tech needs to limit the trio of QB Bryce Perkins, RB Jordan Ellis and WR Olamide Zaccheaus as they are the main attack of UVA’s offense. The Hokies gave up 168 yards on the ground last week to Miami which they will need to limit this week against UVA.
Virginia:
If UVA wants to win they should attack Virginia Tech’s poor rushing defense with RB Jordan Ellis. Ellis has 868 yards and 8 touchdowns on the year, as Virginia Tech’s defense has given up 660 rushing yards combined in their last two games. If the Cavalier’s wanna break the streak a good rushing day from Ellis will help.
Players to Watch:
Virginia Tech:QB Ryan Willis
Willis did not play good last week versus Miami. Throwing for 216 yards a touchdown and two interceptions. The Hokies need Willis to play good in this game if they want to win.
Virginia RB: Jordan Ellis
Ellis only had 12 carries for 36 yards last week against Georgia Tech. If the Cavaliers want to win this game they need to take a advantage of Virginia Tech’ horrendous run defense.
Score Prediction:
For the first time in a long time you can make a case that Virginia has a better football team than Virginia Tech. That won’t help the Cavaliers today. As I believe the Hokies understand the history they have at stake in this game and will be ready.
