Game Run Down:
The stakes for this late-season Big 12 matchup were huge, as with WVU’s loss earlier in the day, the winner of this one would now be in the driver’s seat to claim a spot in the Big 12 title game. Texas needed a redemption game after losing two straight, and they got it. The Longhorns came out strong on both sides of the ball, as Sam Ehlinger led three efficient scoring drives in the first half. The offensive attack was balanced and controlled the ball, while the Longhorn defense just stifled ISU. Without David Montgomery in the first half, all of the pressure was on the shoulders of Brock Purdy. And even though he is a spectacular talent, Purdy struggled. The UT D-line was all over him while the secondary just forced him into some bad decisions. He would later be benched for Kyle Kempt, but it wasn’t enough as UT ran away with this one. The major storyline regarding this game is the health of Sam Ehlinger, who went down with what appeared to be a shoulder injury in the second quarter and didn’t return. The Longhorns need him fully healthy to contend for a Big 12 championship, and his running ability is key to this team’s success as well. Maybe resting him against Kansas next week is a route Tom Herman needs to take.
