ACC Basketball Preview: Wake Forest
Following a huge drop off in the Danny Manning era, the Demon Deacons are looking to build back up to their former glory. Wake Forest faced a demeaning (11-20) record in the 2017-18 season and had no post-season visit. This should start off as a base for this team on what they don’t want to become once again. However, not a lot is looking up for this team, but there is hope.
Returning Players:
The Wake Forest team only returns one starter from last year’s lineup. This would be the lone wolf in Chaundee Brown. Brown averaged (7.6) points a game last year with (3.0) rebounds to balance it. This isn’t terrible for a starting small forward, but not incredible. Two notable returners arise form their former bench: Brandon Childress and Olivier Sarr. Childress averaged a great (9.1) points as the backup point guard for the Deacons last year. And Sarr’s 2017-18 tenure was a baseline of 3 points and rebounds averaged. We will see what new-found starters can do and what they can produce overall for this struggling program.
Incoming Players:
The Deacons had a phenomenal offseason with five recruits coming in with the hope of turning around the program. Wake Forest brings in two 4-star recruits with Jaylen Hoard and Isaiah Mucius. These two played small forward for their respective high school and are here to bring a defensive look balanced with an aggressive offense. Also, the Deacons bring in three 3-star recruits with Sharone Wright, Jamie Lewis, and Michael Wynn. All three played shooting guard for their high school team and will look to bend the guard position in the future. All of these guards range in height from 6″3 (Jamie Lewis) to 6″6 (Michael Wynn). I think you will see a surge of “small ball” in the Wake Forest basketball future under Manning. I am excited to see what this group of players will do to improve on this Deacon team.
Key Games:
Dec. 22 at Tennessee – This game will stand as a mark on how Wake Forest has moved from last year. Tennessee is projected to be a top-10 yet again in NCAA play. If Wake Forest can keep their own against this physical team, then I don’t think Deacon fans should worry as much.
Jan. 8 v. Duke – Duke is constantly a top ACC team year in and year out. Wake Forest always struggles with their in-state opponent and will look to do damage in the ACC with a win.
Feb. 16 v. UNC – Last year, the Deacons started ACC play with a heart-break loss to UNC. Wake Forest will want to eliminate this from happening again, but this time they get it at home.
Projected Season:
Record: 13-18
ACC Tournament: First Round
NCAA Tournament: MISS
