Pick Six: 6 Storylines to Follow into Week 9
We were presented with a week we thought was going to be uneventful, however we were proven ever so wrong. We saw top teams drop down and were upset by their lesser teams. This week is way different, we are presented with some of the best games we might get all year. Let’s see what we need to keep an eye on:
Battle in Jacksonville
We might just get the winner of the SEC East this weekend when the Florida Gators get to meet the Georgia Bulldogs. Both teams come into Saturday with a (6-1, 4-1) record overall and in conference. Florida has moved along with momentum, ever since their loss to Kentucky at home. And Georgia gets to possibly avenge their to LSU just 2 weeks ago. Whoever can make their way to pull of the victory Saturday night will most likely be the favorite to win the SEC East.
First Rodeo
We saw Appalachian State’s first induction into the AP Top 25 this week at the #25 spot. This comes after much hard work from the Mountaineers with winning 6 straight games, after their unfortunate loss to Penn State. The Mountaineers get to travel to Statesboro, Georgia to take on the Georgia Southern Eagles to hopefully take control of the Sun Belt Conference. And it seems that the odd makers and fans are in favor of an App State victory Thursday as they are favored by 10, even with being away. It seems small, but this will be a big game on Thursday night for all fans to watch.
Big Ten Pretender Detector
The Big Ten is known to be one of the most competitive conferences in all of college football. However, we have two teams on our hands that either are under-performing or over-performing to our expected standards. These two would obviously be Iowa and Penn State. And lucky for us, we get to see the two of them square off this weekend. This is sure to be a tight battle that will decide the progression of the Big Ten’s future. Who will get better? Who will decline? Some of those questions are sure to be answered Saturday.
Motion of the West
Stanford was a middle-of-the-line PAC-12 contender in the preseason and they sort of are still…maybe? My attention, however, is more so attracted to Washington State, a team that has displayed they can win big games. Also, Washington State had a commanding victory over Oregon when Gameday came to visit Pullman. This won’t be shoot out, but rather a test for both offenses and if they can produce. With a Stanford victory, we could very well see a discombobulated PAC-12 North.
Early Results
If you are a Virginia Tech fan, you know the importance of a Thursday night game. The Hokies are (4-2) on Thursday night games since 2013 and (2-0) on Thursday night under Justin Fuente. Virginia Tech will host the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets on Thursday night with a chance to remain the favorite for the ACC Coastal. However, the “Battle of the Techs” has been in the favor of Georgia Tech the last two years. Each win in the last two years have gone to Georgia Tech by 10-points or fewer. both squads will be prepared for each other come Thursday and it will be an exciting one for sure.
Kick ‘Em While Their Down
If you weren’t already aware, Purdue upset Ohio State last week with a final score of 49-20. Additionally, Purdue has collected 4 straight victories, since dropping to (0-3) early on in the season. The Boilermakers will travel to Eat Lansing, Michigan to battle the Michigan State Spartans, who dropped a bad one to Michigan last week. Each team is scratching up the ladder to ensure that they get to a bowl game. The line is also within 2 points, so everyone will be expected a close one this Saturday. Whoever can pull off the win, will be a scary bowl opponent for any team if they continue their success.
