Pac 12 Week 7 Review
Their are no more undefeated teams, UCLA picked up their first win of the year and is Oregon back?
Utah 42, Arizona 10
Tyrone Huntley did a little bit of everything Saturday night as he threw for 201 yards and 2 touchdowns, with 64 yards and a touchdown on the ground. As well as a 56 yard touchdown reception off of a trick play from Britian Covey. Utah’s defense played rock solid through out giving a little over 300 total yards and held Arizona out of the end zone till the 4th quarter. Utah pressured UA up front all day as they got to the QB five times in a game where Khalil Tate threw all but 4 passes until he got his ankle rolled up and was ruled out for the rest of the game. Sophomore Rhett Rodriguez came in and threw for 226 yards and a touchdown. Utah continues to gain momentum after a slow start against tough competition, they’ll stay at home with a big game against USC. Arizona will be on the road facing UCLA next week.
#17 Oregon 30, #7 Washington 27
With another big chance at a win at home, Oregon didn’t squander away this opportunity as C.J. Verdell punched it into the end zone in OT to give Oregon the win. UW had a chance to win it in regulation but missed a 37 yard field goal to send it into OT. Washington played the game they wanted to, limiting Oregon’s big play ability as the longest play from scrimmage was only 23 yards. Justin Herbert finished with 202 yards and 2 touchdowns. With the loss, it puts Washington out of the CFP picture and Oregon is more than likely is the last chance for the conference to have a represenative (potentially Colorado). It doesn’t get much easier for the Ducks though as they travel to Pullman where College Gameday and a Saturday Night primetime date with Washington State awaits them. Washington comes back home to face a angry Colorado team, coming off their first loss of the year.
USC 31, #19 Colorado 20
In what seemed like it was going to be a defensive bout for the first quarter and a half, it turned into high octane offense in the last half of the second quarter. Laviska Shenault continues to show his versatility as he scored from 46 yards out from the wildcat formation and had 72 receiving yards before he got hurt and was ruled out for the rest of the week. J.T. Daniels showed his potential as he threw 3 touchdowns in the last 6 minutes to completely flip the momentum of the game with 2 to Pittman Jr. and one to Tyler Vaughns.Montez struggled as he was 26/47 with 170 yards and an interception that was tipped off of Shenault’s hands and taken for a USC touchdown by Ajene Harris. USC was shutting down Colorado’s run game collecting 16 Tackles For Loss and held Colorado to 2.56 Yards per Carry. Colorado is once again on the road with another tough test as they face #15 Washington. USC travels to Salt Lake to take on Utah in what should be a very good game.
UCLA 37, Cal 7
In what seems like a strange strategy, DTR only had 15 pass attempts as UCLA rushed the ball 55 times and Joshua Kelly punched it in 3 times as UCLA gets their first win of the 2018 season and the first under Chip Kelly. Brandon Mcilwain once again struggles as he throws 2 interceptions and finished with a 25.7 QBR. Cal turned the ball over 5 times and was 3-14 on 3rd down conversions. After playing Washington very close last week, there was a good chance UCLA would come out playing really well, but the defense stepped and made a ton of plays. Cal is starting to tailspin a little bit as that’s 3 losses in a row for the Golden Bears. Although, one bright spot for the Bears was Linebacker Jordan Kunaszyk, who had 22 tackles, 2 Tackles For Losses and a forced fumble. This is Jordan’s 4th double digit tackle game as he’s quietly becoming the 2nd best linebacker in the conference behind Ben Burr-Kirven. UCLA comes back home looking for back to back wins against Arizona. Cal will be heading to Corvallis to face Oregon State.
Offensive POTW: J.T. Daniels QB USC
Defensive POTW: Jordan Kunasyzk LB Cal
