6 Players who Stole the Show in Week 6
Week 6 in College Football saw a substantial number of upsets, good games, and fantastic individual play that took front stage. Let’s take a look at six incredible performances from week six.
6. QB Brock Purdy- Iowa State
Where has this kid come from? is one of the greatest questions fans across the country are asking after Brock Purdy’s exquisite performance in upset fashion over Oklahoma State. Purdy, the freshman took his first collegiate snap and his first college start on Saturday and it was one he’ll never forget. The Cyclone quarterback cycle has been a bit wild, but after all the injuries, HC Matt Campbell just may have found his star. Original starter Kyle Kempt remains doubtful with a knee injury, while the next starting QB Zeb Norland is now the backup after a few poor performances. It seemed as if Purdy was untouchable in the upset win, after countless dots to ongoing receivers. He made an already poor Cowboys defense look even worse. Brock Purdy threw for 318 yards and 4 TD, missing just five passes. He also ran for 84 yards and a rushing score. After Saturday’s performance, it is pretty clear who the Cyclone’s starting QB will be.
5. RB Alex Barnes- Kansas State
Alex Barnes has always been the unheard of spark plug that Kansas State’s always had, and on Saturday, that plug was lit. Barnes made a fool out of the Baylor defense, running for huge gains every touch he got. In fact, Barnes ran for three touchdowns over 30 yards. The junior has a history of torching the Baylor defense, making today’s career performance just as special. Barnes rushed for 250 yards on 22 carries, producing a whopping 11.4 YPC. He also caught a pair of receptions for 22 yards. Although the Wildcats haven’t been having the greatest of seasons, head coach Bill Snyder has a great power RB in Alex Barnes.
4. QB Dwayne Haskins- Ohio State
Dwayne Haskins continued his success and sustained his Heisman status in Saturday’s win over Indiana. Haskins threw for season highs in completions (33), yards (455), and touchdowns (6). The sophomore is just another one of Urban Meyer’s quarterback prodigies. Haskins looks to lead the Buckeye’s to another Big Ten championship and a hopeful playoff berth.
3. QB Jordan Ta’amu- Ole Miss
Jordan Ta’amu used his explosive arm to take care of UL Monroe on Saturday, making it look easy to throw the football. Ta’amu has one of the strongest arms in the country, take that and when he’s clicking on all cylinders with his dynamic receivers, that’s what happened last weekend. Ta’amu only played in the first half, but still recorded an overwhelming stat line. The senior threw for 374 yards on 21-24 passing, adding a trifecta of pass TD. What was even more impressive from Ta’amu was his running ability. He ran for 63 yards and a couple of rushing touchdowns en route to a 70-21 victory.
2. WR Laviska Shenault Jr- Colorado
Laviska Shenault continued to show why he may be the best wide receiver in all of college football on Saturday, accounting for all four of Colorado’s touchdowns. Shenault caught 13 passes for 127 yards and 2 receiving TD. He also ran for 13 yards and 2 touchdowns, including the game winning one yard touchdown run with 42 ticks left to give the Buffaloes the lead in the PAC 12 South. This performance greatly increases his chances for a Heisman trophy. Shenault is currently third in the country in receptions and receiving yards. As mentioned earlier, with this success, Shenault may take a trip to New York when this season concludes.
1. QB Sam Ehlinger- Texas
Amazing might be an understatement on how Sam Ehlinger played in the game of his career. Ehlinger shined in the upset win over Oklahoma, a huge boost for Texas, not only relevantly, but nationally. Ehlinger showed no flaws on Saturday, outscoring one of the best offenses in the country, Oklahoma. The sophomore showed how bad he wanted to win the Red River Rivalry. Ehlinger threw for 314 yards on 24-35 throwing, accumulating two passing touchdowns. Ehlinger was even more impressive with his tough and brave running, dashing for 72 yards and three touchdowns. Sam Ehlinger outplayed one of the best quarterbacks in the country, Kyler Murray, and solidified himself into Heisman conversation.
