Game Run Down:
We got an instant classic this year in the Red River Rivalry. Texas and
Oklahoma entered this one with Big 12 and playoff hopes on the line, and
the intensity was high from the start. Both offenses found success early on,
but Texas then put some distance between themselves and OU when the
Longhorn defense began to bow up and stifle Kyler Murray, while Sam Ehlinger led two balanced scoring drives that saw his utilize both his legs and his arm to beat the OU defense. The Sooners scored on a late TD pass from Murray to CeeDee Lamb to pull within 7, but it was clear that Texas had the upper hand. In the third quarter, the Texas offense was just rolling. Ehlinger could get whatever he wanted in the passing and running game. A long Marquise Brown touchdown kept the score respectable, but the Texas defense was playing at such a high level and the offense was just so hot, that it appeared that the 21 point lead the Sooners faced was insurmountable. Then, with 8 minutes left in the 4th, Murray worked his magic. He led 3 straight TD drives, one of which saw him use his freakish speed to burn the Longhorn defense. With a minute left, OU had climbed all the way back to tie things up. But then, the Texas Longhorns showed their maturity. With momentum against them, UT went on a clutch drive that saw Sam Ehlinger use his legs on multiple occasions to enable “Dicker the Kicker” to hit a game-winning field goal to give Tom Herman his signature win and put Texas back on the map. Incredible game and win for a Longhorn team that badly needed it to prove that they are back to being a contender, while for OU, their offense will keep them in every game, but the defense is still a major weak point.
