Kentucky Continues Hot Start As The Wildcats Handle South Carolina
Kentucky took control from the start to stamp a perfect 5-0 season record, lead by a great defensive performance by the ‘Cats, holding a solid Gamecock offense to just 10 points. The Wildcats were lead by a lethal first half rushing game, including Heisman hopeful Benny Snell Jr, who is currently second in the country in rushing yards. Kentucky continued to show their confident swagger with yet another win, their best start in SEC play (3-0) since 1977.
Kentucky started hot from the get-go, dominating in the second quarter to extend their halftime lead to 24-3. This was plenty enough for the Wildcats offense, as the stifling defense shut down QB Jake Bentley and the South Carolina offense. The Gamecocks cut the lead down to 14 with a 58 yard TD pass from Bentley to Deebo Samuel in the third quarter. Unfortunately for SC, this wasn’t nearly enough as they couldn’t get anything down the field in the fourth quarter.
The Wildcats outscored South Carolina 21-0 in the second quarter, all three of those touchdowns came on the ground with three different players. QB Terry Wilson ran the first touchdown in from a yard out, capping off the ‘Cats best drive of the day at 11 plays and 75 yards. Wilson finished with 59 yards on the ground and 132 yards through the air, but adding an interception to his statline. The second rush touchdown was by backup RB Asim Rose from 24 yards out. Rose finished with 38 rush yards on the day. The final rush touchdown was by star RB Benny Snell Jr, a fantastic spin move propelling the four yard touchdown. Snell finished just shy of another 100 yard game at 99 yards.
The Kentucky defense has to be the MVP of this game. Other than giving up the long TD pass, the ‘Cats defense was nearly perfect. Picking off Jake Bentley 3 times. DB’s Mike Edwards, Derrick Baity Jr, and Darius West all had key interceptions in Kentucky’s win. Darius West also lead the Wildcats with 9 tackles, tied for the senior’s season high. Stud LB Josh Allen also had a great game, contributing 8 tackles with 3 sacks and 4 TFL. Senior LB Jordan Jones had a key fumble recovery early in the first quarter that lead to Kentucky’s first score.
