Colorado Pulls Away Late To Secure Win Vs UCLA
On Friday night we saw two completely different teams.
Colorado is trending upward. With the win over UCLA, the Buffaloes improved to 4-0 on the season.
UCLA on the other hand, continues their downward spiral. With their 4th loss of the season, UCLA moves to 0-4 for the first time since 1971.
Surprisingly, UCLA was able to keep this game for close in the first half. The Bruins and Buffaloes traded punches for most of the first half. In fact, UCLA trailed by just a single point at the intermission. But, in the second half, Colorado was just too much.
Steven Monetz continued to play out of his mind. The Junior completed 22 out of his 26 pass attempts for 237 yards. Montez was also able to impress with his legs; he also ran for 81 yards and two touchdowns.
Most of Montez’s success can be credited to Sophomore stud, Laviska Shenault Jr. In tonight’s victory, Shenault caught a career-high 12 passes for 126 yards and a touchdown.
The quarterback situation for UCLA is a little bit more complicated. The previous starter, Wilton Speight had been sidelined due to a back injury that he sustained in the Bruins opener, but since, Speight was cleared to play. However, Chip Kelly made the choice to continue to roll with Freshman, Dorian Thompson-Robinson.
Thompson-Robinson is not as polished of a QB when compared to Speight, but his upside is undeniable. In the Bruins loss tonight, the Freshman passed for 138 yards and 1 touchdown.
After this win Colorado could have something special brewing. The Buffaloed 4-0 start puts them at a threshold that they haven’t seen since 1998.
As for UCLA, well the locker room will be a lot more grim after this loss. Next up for the Bruins is Washington.
