Pick Six: 6 Storylines to follow into Week 5
Week 4 of college football gave us exactly what we wanted in terms of upsets, rivalries, and good playing all around. Let’s see what Week 5 has to offer:
Bounce Back
With the upsets of Virginia Tech, Mississippi State, and Oklahoma State, there is a lot to be proven by teams. There are really 2 options after upsets for teams: continue to lose or get right back up. The teams I feel have the best potential of digging themselves out of their hole are Virginia Tech and Mississippi State. These 2 have shown to be great teams, so far, without the upset on the block. Both have uncanny defensive abilities and a great offense. They both face hard tests, but nothing to overbearing for them. On the other hand we have Oklahoma State. As it goes in the Big 12: you lose one, you’ll lose another. And with teams like Texas, Oklahoma, West Virginia, and TCU left, I’m not liking their chances. How will these teams bounce back? And will it be enough to put them back on track?
Scott with a little-too-much Frost
Embarrassment. There really is no other way to describe what this loss to Michigan meant to this Nebraska team. They were man handled the whole game and never seemed to break out of their rut. Yes, I know this is about the 3rd time Scott Frost has been a focus on this list, but it is because this team continues to fail over and over. I am waiting for this Nebraska to do something it has promised to its fans…win.
Playoff Deciders
Whether it be the Buckeyes taking on the Nittany Lions at Beaver during a white-out game or Stanford attempting to dethrone the Notre Dame Fighting Irish for their spotlight, all signs are pointing to major deciders. This week will end up having a lot of influence on what teams will be talked about by the selection committee come January. For me, the match-up in State College is the one I will be looking forward to. I don’t know if it’s the atmosphere, implications, or scandal surrounding this game. I am looking for Ohio State to prove they can compete with the big dogs and Penn State to show that they can end their streak of bad starts in games. Whatever it may be, it’s looking to be a great game in both occasions.
PAC-12 Battles
After last week, give me a game like Stanford-Oregon any day and I’ll be happier than ever. If the two ranked battles between Oregon-Cal and Washington-BYU are anything like what we had just a week ago, then we will be having some serious major-bowl game talks with the projections next week. This slate of games could provide the PAC-12 with a strong push toward major-bowl appearances. So far, the teams that are enticing to place in these games are Washington, Stanford, and Oregon. Let’s see what these guys over on the west coast can do.
The National Champs are back! (Not Alabama)
Here we go again. Yes ladies and gentlemen, the team down in Florida are poising to go undefeated once again in the American Conference. UCF is looking crazy good this year and no one has stood to test them. Many are saying that UCF could easily be placed into the Playoff this year. Unfortunately for the UCF fans, there is such a thing called “Strength of Schedule”. And yes, this does very much apply to whether a team gets into the playoff or not. And quite frankly, not many think that UCF should even be considered because of that fact. Unless UCF went out and won the rest of their games by 50 a piece, then we most likely won’t see this occur. Better luck next year?
Snell Yeah
Who told you so? Benny Snell is everything he says he is and a little more. After his monster game against the aggressive Mississippi State defense last week, I think we are all excited to see what Snell can do against South Carolina. Snell is averaging an astounding 135 yards a game this year and shows no signs of stopping. As well as playing, Snell talks up a big deal the week going into the game to really build a narrative. This was seen first hand against Mississippi State before and after the game had came. Could Snell be the Conor McGregor of college football? Lets not get that far, but yes, he talks it and walks it. And so far Kentucky is undefeated, lets see if they can keep going under Snell.
